So I want to first start out by saying that after doing some research, the verdict is still not in on the actual scientific evidence of the benefit of the alkaline diet. I will though discuss what I do know and what makes sense to me. First off, the alkaline diet is not focused on losing weight. The main focus of this diet is health. Science is leaning toward the idea that if our body has an acidic environment, we are more prone to health issues such as chronic inflammation and cancer. The premise of the alkaline diet is to keep your body’s ph alkaline to prevent these health issues. One bit of information out there that tends to be misleading however, is that eating alkaline foods will lower your blood ph. That unfortunately is not the case. Our organs such as the kidneys, lungs, and adrenal glands are in charge of regulating our blood ph. The alkaline foods will keep are urine ph alkaline, but that does not represent where our blood ph is. So this may make you feel there is no point in giving the diet a try. I personally do not think that is entirely true. The diet is full of rich in nutrient foods that nourish your body and the organs that are responsible for regulating the ph. With that said, those organs will function better if you are nourishing them properly.
To try and keep things on a very simple basis on the nutrition of the diet, It recommends avoiding all dairy and caffeine. Try to stick to alkaline water. They also recommend to eat raw fruits and vegetables as much as possible. When you cook your vegetables, they get more acidic. Avoid processed meats, and try to occasionally trade meat for a protein substitute such as legumes. Cut out gluten and sugar. Green smoothies are great. The top 7 most alkaline foods are celery, cucumber, kale, spinach, bell peppers, avocado, and broccoli. So obviously this is just the basis of eating a clean healthy diet. I know it can be hard at times to get all the recommended vegetables and nutrients in during the day. Taking supplements can sometimes be a helpful solution. I like Green Vitality from goDesana, it is specifically formulated with the alkaline diet in mind and has a ton of superfoods in it I recommend checking it out!
disclaimer: I am a consultant for goDesana, but would never recommend anything I didn’t truly believe was good.
